"The Space Race"

An American astronaut, a Russian Cosmonaut and a Chinese Taikonaut are engaged in a lunar biathlon of laser rifle target shooting and running a cross-country race in spacesuits to determine which country will gain control of a key lunar area. But then someone starts cheating, and death enters the footrace as well....

My story was chosen to lead off this anthology, which was pretty cool. A fun bit is that the Americans in the story were all members of my writing group. Also, the area in question on the surface of the Moon--the mythical Rimae Bendix--is named for the speculative fiction author Michael Bendix.

Trivia note: this is the first story in which I began signing my name as J F Benedetto.
