Bubba played left tackle for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but hated the elitist attitude; he had the physique of a pro football player, but not the desire. He chose not to enter the NFL draft and instead chose to take his Bachelor's in Criminal Justice, and became a cop. Officer Grant knows his size scares the bejebus out of most people, and he takes full advantage of it. (It doesn't scare everybody, though, and he knows better than to play the Intimidation Card in every situation; as one gang-banger put it, "Bullet'll stop ya.") He is not, by nature, a violent man (he's actually kind of a softie once you get to know him), but he's an expert at the Menacing Loom. Few people are prepared for the extraordinary speed and power of a professional football player. If Bubba feels threatened--or senses imminent threat to a civilian or fellow cop--his first instinct is to identify the source of the threat and flatten the dumb son of a bitch. People counting on the big guy to move slow typically wind up needing something X-rayed.
It should be noted that Grant utterly loves football to distraction. His co-workers know better than to try engaging him in casual conversation about "yesterday's game." Asking him anything football-related is like asking a Jesuit to describe the nature of God; the answer will be very enlightening, but is also unlikely to be at all brief.
